Welcome back to our early morning seminary teacher training series! In this video, we explore how to equip your students with essential skills for deep scripture study, helping them move beyond simply reading to truly searching and discovering gospel truths.
Key Concepts Covered in This Training:
The Power of Pondering and Asking Questions: To ponder means to meditate or think deeply, often coupled with prayer, which allows the Spirit to reveal truth. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland challenged, we must invite students to "examine every word, every scriptural gem" and "hold it up to the light and turn it" to unearth hidden treasures. Furthermore, learning to ask questions and seek answers is one of the most important scripture-study skills a student can develop to discover doctrine and understand context.
Visualizing and Likening to Real Life: Students should be taught to visualize, or picture in their minds what is taking place—such as Peter walking on the water or Shadrach in the fiery furnace—which makes the scriptural account vivid and real. Additionally, "likening" the scriptures by comparing the text to one's own life helps students more easily identify principles and see how they apply to similar situations they face.
Analytical Skills for Deeper Insight: We explore practical analytical skills like cross-referencing and comparing and contrasting. For example, contrasting the righteous reign of King Benjamin with the wicked reign of King Noah brings gospel truths into sharper focus. Identifying lists and searching for connections, patterns, and themes also broadens our perspective of the plan of salvation.
Classroom Implementation: The best way to teach these skills is through shared practice. As teachers use these methods in class, they should occasionally pause and briefly discuss the specific skill being used, intentionally encouraging students to apply it in their own personal study.
