I looked up to see a dead squirrel with an ermine standing over the body, right next to the house, under the bird feeder. The mad scramble to find a camera ensued. I keep the camera on a tripod, but the critters were so close to the house that I could not get a decent angle from the tripod. Hence, all of this is hand held.
The ermine ran off, disappeared under a large rock about 100 feet away, and then reappeared at the near end of the tunnel that the squirrels had dug in the snow. After that, I managed to start shooting video.
I think the ermine wanted to drag the body into the tunnel, but was unable to do that.because the tunnel was too narrow.
Notice that the body size of the squirrel is about the same as the ermine, but the ermine effortlessly lifts the squirrel body up so high that it can scamper up a hillside with the body not hitting the ground. Pretty amazing feat.
