Here is another take of Erik Satie's Petite Ouverture à Danser, recorded during the same session as the version I previously posted.
The Petite Ouverture à danser (Little Overture to a Dance) is a short work for solo piano, composed around 1897. Unknown for many years, it is one of the more popular pieces to emerge from Satie’s posthumous manuscripts.
Satie left the piece unpublished at his death in 1925, as an untitled draft without bar lines, dynamic markings, or phrasing. Musicologists usually date it to 1897, since the sketch is contemporaneous with the Pièces froides and shares the early Gnossiennes style he was revisiting at that time. Beginning and ending with an ethereal A-flat major melody, the work drifts calmly through various seemingly unrelated keys; a gentle momentum is sustained by offbeat chords in the inner voices. The result is a subtle harmonic ambiguity without dissonance or drama — a placid, atmospheric miniature.
In the late 1960s, Robert Caby edited several collections of Satie’s unpublished manuscripts from the Bibliothèque nationale de France for issue by Salabert. Among these was the first commercial edition (1969) of the notorious Vexations, as well as numerous sketches, drafts, and exercises that Satie had left behind. Caby’s editorial choices, including giving untitled pieces romantic-sounding names Satie himself would likely have disliked, have been questioned by critics. Still, a few genuine gems emerged from these volumes. Caby recognized potential in the Petite Ouverture à danser (a title he coined) and had it published as a stand-alone work in 1968.
Though brief, the piece has since become a quiet favorite among pianists and audiences. It is often programmed alongside the Gnossiennes or Pièces froides. While some argue Satie might not have considered it “complete,” its charm and understated atmosphere have secured it a modest but enduring place in the repertoire.
