During the winter holidays, I ended up watching The Young Pope (even though I’m not the biggest fan of TV series in general). In some episodes, a simple yet intriguing piano leitmotif caught my attention. I found myself wondering how the piece would develop, and eventually, I tracked it down—it turned out to be Kissing Disease by French musician Laurent Girard, known professionally as Melodium.
Originally featured on his 2009 album Cerebro Spin, released by Audio Dregs Recordings, the track blends electronic and acoustic elements, creating a minimalist yet emotive atmosphere. However, when I listened to the full composition outside the series, I was a bit surprised. It felt more like a sequencer-generated track played through a toy synthesizer, layered with ambient noise. That said, I must admit—it worked effectively in the film.
Inspired by the original, I decided to interpret Kissing Disease myself. I didn’t follow its exact structure but used all the elements that appeared in the original. In the end, I came up with three different versions. None of them fully satisfied me, so I decided to share all three.
*Kissing Disease was featured in episodes 1 and 3 of the television series The Young Pope
**The Young Pope is a satirical drama television series created and directed by Paolo Sorrentino for Sky Atlantic, HBO, and Canal+. The series stars Jude Law as the disruptive Pope Pius XIII and Diane Keaton as his confidante, Sister Mary, in a Vatican full of intrigues. The series was co-produced by the European production companies Wildside, Haut et Court TV, and Mediapro.
The world premiere of The Young Pope was on 3 September 2016 at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, where the first two episodes were screened out of competition, the first time in the history of the festival that a TV series has been a part of the program.
