The Equinox deck, designed by Jackson Robinson is the first offering from the Kings Wild Project subscription service. The deck features a simple yet attractive, 1950s-60s era inspired vintage-feeling tuck case printed on matte card stock. The central focus of the tuck box is the marigold and blood orange repeating pattern made up of tiny shining suns within a lattice of frames. It certainly has a wallpaper-ish feel that could have been completely commonplace on the walls of a mad men era apartment, down to what feels like a chair rail dividing the lower half, a repeating pattern of vertical lines in two shades of red-orange. Wrapping around three sides of the box is a premium feeling white label that announced the deck name, the month and year of release, and the edition numbering.
The back design features the same repeating pattern found on the box in a full bleed casino style design. The cards faces are of course completely custom. The pips and indices are a bit smaller than standard although still very legible. Rather than the standard red and black, the Equinox deck features a more muted palette with red-orange for the hearts and diamonds and slate gray for the clubs and spades. The pips themselves are uniquely shaped as well.
The court cards are inspired by standard courts but feature many unique touches. The line work on the faces is well defined. The bodies include swathes of the back design pattern--that now take on a fabric feel, as well as the ghosted gray version, throughout. The hands are refined and the weapons continue the stylized motif. The queens feature some carefully placed spots of color on the faces, no doubt to give the appearance of rouge. My favorite of which is the Queen of Spades with her medieval style head covering.
