Along the western edge of Hyrule Town stands Ru Lon Ranch, where Hyrule’s horses have been reared and trained for many years. Nabooru, a respected Gerudo warrior, and Talon own the ranch, and have kept it a safe sanctuary from the war that rages outside its walls.
“I’m sorry, I really am. I wish I could help. But my people are proud, and I cannot be seen to aid any who desires to challenge them,” says Nabooru with regret.
“Please – our only hope is to convince all sides of this war to agree to peace, and I’ve never been close to Gerudo Valley before. I don’t know how to approach them, or what they might ask of me in return.”
“Wars come and go, this is the way of things. But the Gerudo will not forgive one of their own who helps an enemy.”
“I am no enemy. I’m just a mother – like you. If you won’t help me for Hyrule’s sake, do it for your daughter. Malon still has a chance to grow up like we did, and to continue the family ranch after you’re gone.”
After a pause, Nabooru’s gaze softens.
“This I cannot deny – and it turns out I cannot refuse. You may say I am a friend of yours; and you may take a horse to carry you, for they will require you to prove yourself in ways you’ve never been tested before.
“But I can spare only our wildest. Her name is Epona. If you can tame her, you will be the first – but then perhaps there will be more bearing that name, if she and you can achieve great deeds together.”
With great thanks, Link’s mother learns a lullaby that will call Epona to her side. Bow in hand and sword at her side, she spurs Epona on and into the unknown.
