Design is an alternate dimension of adaptation. It is a controversial idea in evolutionary thought, because Darwinism rejects the purposefulness and intelligence that is implied by the word. There is, in fact, a rational way of understanding design as a process, not a state, and this leads us to a coherent theory of adaptation, both for individuals, and for lineages, that is to say, evolution.
