There are many different models of Enigma machines, developed for different uses by different countries from the 1920s until the 1940s.
The Abwehr Enigma G was used by the German Military Intelligence, and is smaller than most German Enigma machines. This machine does not have a plugboard on the front, making the ciphers created by these machines less complex than those produced by later models.
In our collection at Bletchley park, we also hold a different variant of the same model, discovered buried in a farmyard on the Polish/Czech border. Fewer than 20 Enigma G machines are known to survive, as German Enigma machines were deliberately destroyed post-war.
