Did you know that over 16,000,000 women in Africa depend on the shea tree for their livelihoods? However, the shea tree population is rapidly declining, threatening the sustainability of these women and their communities. As part of the Great Green Wall Initiative, a transformative project led by the Global Shea Alliance and the United Nations to combat desertification. This initiative is not only restoring degraded land in Mali and Burkina Faso but in just seven months, the results speak for themselves:
2,553 women shea producers in 5 cooperatives empowered
7 hectares of degraded land restored
7,500 shea trees planted alongside crops such as baobabs, sesame, tomatoes, and peppers
