On April 4, 2024, at approximately 12:15 PM, police were dispatched to the Home Depot at 1140 Malabar Rd SE in the City of Palm Bay regarding a shoplifting. Before police arrived, a District Loss Prevention Officer had identified that an employee had stolen a validated total of $5,702.81 in items between September 21, 2023, and March 18, 2024. Surveillance video showed the employee using her cashier identifier to steal various items, including flooring, paint, molding, clothing, batteries, drill bits, tile, and a miter saw. Her method of theft involved either scanning an item and immediately returning it in the same transaction, or scanning a single item but allowing the customer to leave with multiple other unscanned, unpaid items. These thefts were linked to a customer 11 times and a Hardware Associate 7 times during the six-month period.
