Emotional intelligence—often called EQ (Emotional Quotient)—is the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and use emotions effectively in yourself and others. It’s what helps you stay calm under pressure, empathize with a friend, resolve conflict smoothly, or motivate a team.
It typically includes five core components:
- Self-awareness – Recognizing your own emotions and how they affect your thoughts and behavior.
- Self-regulation – Managing your emotions in healthy ways, especially in stressful situations.
- Motivation – Harnessing emotions to pursue goals with energy and persistence.
- Empathy – Understanding the emotions of others and responding with compassion.
- Social skills – Building and maintaining healthy relationships through communication and conflict resolution.
The concept was popularized by psychologist Daniel Goleman in the 1990s, and it’s now widely recognized as a key factor in personal and professional success
