We are losing species at an alarming rate. I just got back from Australia where nearly half a billion animals died in the devastating forest fires. Many of the birds I grew up with in the South West of Australia like the Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo – Ngoolyark in Noongar language – are now on the endangered list. It is heart-wrenchingly sad – a complex grief that comes entangled with a huge dose of guilt.
I wrote this as a breakup song, but not about two parting lovers – it’s actually about my romance with our earth and all her species. It’s a plea for her, and them, to stay with me, to not let me go – and a promise to do all I can to make the relationship work.
An excerpt from Wendell Berry’s poem ‘The Peace of Wild Things’:
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
