🧵 Embroidery and recovery in the First World War.
In this short video, our Assistant Curator shares beautiful examples of embroidery created by patients in military hospitals during the First World War. These delicate works were more than just decoration, embroidery was used as occupational therapy, helping to strengthen muscles, improve coordination, and offer comfort and focus during recovery.
By the time of the Second World War, specially designed needlework kits were commissioned for the armed forces, continuing the vital role of craft in rehabilitation. ❤️
These pieces are just a few of over 50,000 objects in our stored collection. Soon, they will move to a new Collections Hub at the RAF Museum Midlands, where they will be accessible to the public for the very first time.
