Each year on Memorial Day our town has a display of flags in the downtown city park. “Flags From the Heart” allows flag dedications for those who have served in our nation’s armed services as well as for those who died while serving our country. This year, 2017, there were over 200 flags flown. I always sponsor a flag for my second great uncle, Pvt Andrew Longley, who was killed during the American Civil War. Next year I will add more flags for Johann Michael App, Friederich App, and Mathias App (a father and his two sons) all of whom served in the American Revolutionary War. Johann Michael App was my 5th great grandfather who came to this country in 1752 from Germany. This year the park’s “sentinel” is a 100% brass sculpture nearly 40 feet tall of “American Gothic”.
