About This Release:
Mouche (real name Tim Karmouche) returns to Australian label Research Records with another full-length of imaginary soundtracks, instrumentals and sun-kissed digital jazz. Active on the Melbourne scene in projects such as Crepes/The Murlocs/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild, Tims first album Live From The Bubble arrived back in 2020 as an ode to his aptly named studio space - The Bubble.
Lake Songs builds on those same atmospheres, showcasing the inward-looking craft of his one-man band. Cicada field recordings and light keys open proceedings, reflecting the warmer side of 80s new age, though before long were introduced to a variety of stylistic shifts incorporating elements of cosmic funk, lounge and library-style compositions. There are traces of Steve Hiett, Max Groove or even the recently re-discovered Ronald Langestraat, though the strength of Mouches talent for harmony shines through on its own level.
Shifting between moods yet reflecting an overarching sense of positivity, listening through the ten tracks gives off a real sense of place, though time is somewhat irrelevant. The warm climate and sandy beaches of Australia seem eternally embodied in Juice or Crystal Water. Perhaps where Live From The Bubble was dedicated to the very studio that birthed it, Lake Songs is dedicated to the vast land that surrounds it.")

Rafet studied music from a young age. Tertiary education brought about further teachings in jazz. Growing up in the family village of Miniara (North Lebanon) saw to an inquiry into maqamat and traditional arabic musics post study. After composing for multiple ensembles and performing in various projects over the years, Rafet settles into his own artistry with You Are In The Embrace of The History. This body of work is one that is personal; sighting connection to a land, spirit and devotion to a holy other.
You Are In the Embrace of The History delivers longing with grace, a realisation of ancestral memory with the eloquence of an internal knowing. Finding home in the cradle of the poem, a universal affirmation lies deep within an irregular heartbeat.
The listener is offered an invitation to enter into the vista of expansive harmonic voicings, anticipating resolution. The work is edged by expressions of spiritual jazz and tempered by the scope of ambient musics.

Were guided through a series of rooms that are undeniably his, yet lays no claim to them. Rafets latest release, armed with the resonance of nostalgia and longing, mysticism and colour, takes a simultaneously personal and distanced thesis of the translation of experience.
For an instrumental composition, the track is rich with image. His arrangement remains evasive, never quite taking full flight. It remains held in anticipation, shimmering with recollection. The soul wants to depart, to return, but much like our attempts at reaching back into the corners of our mind, Rafets subject is but a visitation to memory and trace.

Curious Music is an ambient guitar record conceived by members of Sydney bands DEN/Exec during the changing of the seasons circa lockdown 2020. The fuzzy, downer headspace and cyclical feel that the duo explore across the two tape sides draws parallels with the work of fellow practitioners Jon Collin or G.S. Schray.
Sailing the course set by British post-punk hoaxers Deux Filles and building a sound world that will appeal to all hermetic six-stringers with a penchant for reverb, this is couchlock music of the highest order. Eerie, spectral noises flit across the stereo field and make 35 minutes somehow feel like a lifetime (and we mean this in the best way possible). Michael Grossman and Jai Morris-Smith allude to a fascination with early musical experiences informing their making of Curious Music, a break from louder, more punk-focused projects and a tragic boat accident tying the duo into a shared musical bond. The spacier compositions of Pascal Comelade also ring true here as a reference point, no matter where you try to ground your ears the phasers are set to disorientate. Guitars are used to mimic bursts of sound one may associate with a trumpet or a piano rather than riffing off the norm, the sound design explained as process of curiosity and experimentation. Grossman is a studio mixer / producer based in Marrickville, Morris-Smith has been playing in Sydney rock bands for close to 15 years.")

Packed full of DIY dub mixing, cosmic orchestration and raw, percussion driven polyrhythms, the recordings have been remastered and put to vinyl for the first time with sections from Casual Rhythms Vol. 1 being re-shaped into previously unavailable single tracks. Recording plays a big role in the Elite Beat creative process. The studio as an instrument. Much of the Elite Beat music is mixed in an all-hands-on-deck dub style approach - live with an analog mixer and loads of FX being thrown and dubbed in real time. The sound is genre-less rhythm music with an emphasis on live playing, free form expression and technique that borrows from soundsystem culture. Inspiration can be heard from all parts of time and place. Some Ethio Jazz, Black Ark psychedelia, Exotica, Malian blues, even Haight-Ashbury in the summer of love. Each member an accomplished musician in their own right, Elite Beat thrive on collaboration. 2018 saw the release of their astral-Saharan jams with celebrated Taureg guitarist Mdou Moctar. The players get together every Wednesday evening, sometimes to chat, sometimes to play. The ‘record’ button gets pressed when they find what they are searching for. For this crew it’s all about ‘Casual Rhythms / Harmonious Lifestyles’ - if things don’t fall under that mantra, then it’s got to go. ‘Less is more’ for Elite Beat and their cosmic sounds.")

Research Records indicate their inclination for cosmic instrumentation and kraut pervaded polyrhythms once again with an introduction to newcomer Glass Beams. Recorded at the beginning of 2020, Mirage is the first release from the artist, issuing four compositions that lend from a profusion of sounds and influences.
The albums opener and title Mirage arrives with a coiling vocal mantra that conspires with a sliding bassline and transcendent synthwork, reminiscent of early 70s prog jams yet inverted and futuristic. Taurus is a brisk arrangement, steeped with spaghetti-western elements and space-jazz to pave the way for the agile Kong. Rife with psych-fusion guitar phrases and instrumentation, Kong unfolds like a forecast lysergic voyage. The finale Rattlesnake nudges the serpent with intergalactic scales and spellbinding riffs. We may not know much about the enigmatic Glass Beams but Mirage is one epic inauguration, leaving the listener with more questions than answers.")
