Coupled oscillators in resonance demonstrate visually and aurally the principle of conservation of momentum where energy is exchanged.
Both pendulums are made of Copper Coated Beads (CCB) which are suspended from a PVC frame with sewing threads. These threads are connected together with a horizontal one with a red label in its center (for better visibility). The bead on the right is flanked by two chime bars of a door-bell.
One chime bar is charged with a positive potential of 8.5KVolts while the other is electrically grounded. When the right-hand bead is brought in contact with one chime bar, it assumes its charge and therefore repelled, as well as attracted by the other bar which has the reversed polarity. The electrical energy delivered to this system compensates for the loss of energy, primarily through friction and sound.
The right-hand bead comes to almost complete stop while the other is in full swing. When the right-hand bead is in full swing, the excursion of the left-hand one decreases but the bead does not stop moving because the right-hand bead is confined to a smaller excursion by the bars; instead of absorbing more energy, it begins transferring energy to the left-hand bead.
