"El Condor Pasa" is a hauntingly beautiful and iconic melody originating from a Peruvian zarzuela (a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter containing dances and choruses) composed by Daniel Alomía Robles in 1913. Based on traditional Andean folk music, the instrumental piece evokes the majestic flight of the condor, a powerful symbol of freedom and the Andean spirit. While originally part of a theatrical work, the song gained international fame in the 1970s through the Simon & Garfunkel cover, "El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)," which added English lyrics and further cemented its place as a timeless and evocative piece of music cherished worldwide.
