I compare Bigme’s new Hyper Refresh mode with its already-fast Extreme mode, an LCD display and TCL NXTPAPER. The important improvement isn’t really watching videos on E-Ink. It is the way scrolling, tapping buttons and moving around Android finally starts to feel properly responsive.
There is also an obvious question: does driving an E-Ink display this quickly reduce its lifespan? We look at the often-quoted figures, why 80 rendered frames do not mean 80 complete screen refreshes, and why manufacturers still need to publish better long-term evidence.
E-Ink may now be fast enough. The next challenge is making the different refresh modes work intelligently without requiring the user to manage them.
