Hi, I'm Jake Bradford from the School of Computer Science at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. My field of research is bioinformatics. My research is looking at algorithms to improve the safety and efficiency of the CRISPR gene editing technology.
We design algorithms that predict the likelihood of an edit being successful, as well as algorithms that quickly evaluate the safety of the technology as well.
Software engineering is a large part of bioinformatics because of the size of the data that we're using and the complexity of it. It's important to design software applications that solve complex biological problems in an efficient way, meaning both in time and space.
We do need high performance computing in order to achieve the complex problems that we're trying to solve because of the size of the data that we're having to analyse, as well as the number of data sets that we're analysing.
DNA sequencing is becoming more readily available, cheaper, and it's producing huge volumes of data, and by using HPC, we're able to analyse all of that data.
I attended the International High Performance Computing Summer School because it gave me the opportunity to engage with experts over a week -long period in an intensive way to learn advanced topics in HPC that hadn't yet had the opportunity to engage with.
I would say to anyone that's interested in attending the summer school that you should definitely apply for it because it's a fantastic opportunity. You learn a lot in that week. You get to engage with a lot of interesting people, and it's definitely one of the highlight summer schools that I've been to.
The experience of working with mentors that I've met across the globe, but as well as the mentors coming from Pawsey at the summer school was incredibly valuable. They provided strong and robust background knowledge in that field, but as well as professional advice to me on how I can progress my career, and Ann and Cristian provided an excellent week of engagement, it was one of the best summer schools I've been to and one of the best professional events I've been to.
