Almost everything we manufacture, buy or use is the result of a global supply chain. Practices in the various parts of the supply chains can be considered sustainable if they have reduced CO2 emissions, better business resilience, positive social impact or support new business model. Concepts like the Triple Bottom Line, ESG and the UN Sustainable Development Goals define sustainability as a combination of environmental, social and economic components.

Data and AI play a pivotal role in transforming global supply chains to become sustainable via the concepts of twin transformation and data spaces. These provide a standardized and secure way to exchange data in global supply chains.
The automotive industry's Data Space Catena-X was created in 2021 and already provides many organizations worldwide with a standardized and secure way to exchange data in global supply chains, leveraging concepts like Digital Twins and Digital Produce Passports.
Peter Klement, Sloan Fellow ’09, and Sunitha Ray, SM ’19 will have a Fireside Chat based on a paper Peter authored on a Strategic Framework for Sustainable Supply Chains. Peter Klement, Sloan Fellow '09, has worked for over 25 in the digital space, helping clients with digital transformation of their businesses. For more than 10 years, he has been focused on global supply chains in the industrial space and has lived and worked in all 5 continents with many different industries. At MIT he discovered his passion for sustainability, attending the Leadership Lab with Peter Senge. His focus now is on using digital technologies to help with the transformation of global supply chains towards making them more sustainable. As part of the global automotive industry association Catena-X, he is shaping digital standards to make the exchange of data in a global supply chain more effective and efficient, while considering cyber security and data ownership.
Peter writes a LinkedIn newsletter, Sustainable Supply Chains, exploring how digital innovation can help make global supply chains more sustainable. He has been the Director of the MIT Club of Germany's Sustainability team for 5 years and recently presented at the Hannover Messe.
Sunitha Ray, SM '19, Supply Chain, is a digital supply chain, AI and technology transformation executive based in New York City. She's a member of MIT's Global Supply Chain and Logistics Excellence (SCALE) Network, a mentor for Graduate Program, an MIT Technology Review Global Panelist. She is currently a CEO/COO/CTO advisor & consultant on supply. She has lead large-scale business transformation for global retailers and manufacturers such as Benjamin Moore, Dunkin' Brands and SharkNinja and spent over 20 years in technology & strategy consulting with Capgemini, empowering leading retailers/manufacturers such as Walmart, The Gap, Kroger, A&P, Johnson Controls, Motorola, FedEx and Tesco based in North & Latin America and EMEA.
