Find out about decarbonizing at any scale - home, community or global - from our guest speaker, Professor Christoph Reinhart, who leads the Sustainable Design Lab. Homes and other buildings are major greenhouse gas contributors but can be improved with a catalog of improvement options - from adding insulation or sealing leaks in the building envelope to switching to heat pumps or installing solar electricity systems.
The Sustainable Building Lab is developing tools that integrate data about conditions, technologies and costs to upgrade buildings. These models can produce better government, owner and strategies for good invest to reduce emissions and heat and cool buildings in a warming world. Owners need specific advice about upfront costs, payback time and the degree of disruption to ongoing operations. Tenants living in upgraded buildings will want to be assured that any upgrade will not lead to untenable rent increases. Christoph will focus on how the intertwined goals of future-proofing buildings were deployed in the modeling done for the 2.3million residential buildings in Massachusetts and how it can scale internationally. He''ll also discuss how their research informs the options for the MIT campus to carbonize its operations, including the pros and cons of clean energy networks.
Our speaker:
Christoph Reinhart, Terri and Alan Spoon Professor of Architecture and Climate, came to MIT in 2011 and became Director of the Building Technology Program in 2017. He was part of a spin-off founding team of spinoff mapdwell (now part of Palmetto Clean Tech), which helps consumers and businesses with distributed energy upgrades and resources. He is also a managing member of Solemma LLC. Other experience includes staff scientist positions at the National Research Council of Canada, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, and National Research Council of Canada.
Professor Reinhart studied physics in Germany and Vancouver, Canada, and received his Dr. Ing. Architecture, from the Technical University of Karlsruhe, Germany.
