Carved during times of hardship, "hunger stones" are visible again as rivers shrink.
A postcard of the Děčín stone from 1904 notes that water levels had been carved into it since the 14th century, and that the 1904 low was the lowest since 1417. The oldest year still legible today is 1616. The rest has worn away.
