The LSO perform movements from Elgar's Enigma Variations as part of the 2026 BMW Classics concert live from Trafalgar Square.

One of the most beloved works in the orchestral repertoire, Elgar's Enigma Variations is a musical celebration of friendship. The work began as a simple melody that Elgar improvised at the piano at home. Encouraged by his wife, Alice, he developed the theme into a set of 13 variations, each portraying a friend, colleague, or loved one through music.

Among the most famous is Nimrod, a deeply moving tribute to Elgar's close friend and editor, August Jaeger. Jaeger's surname means 'hunter' in German, inspiring the title 'Nimrod' after the biblical hunter. Today, Nimrod remains one of the most recognised pieces of classical music, frequently performed at commemorative events, state occasions, and concerts around the world.
