Echo Mountain is a 5.5 mile out-and-back with 1,400 feet of gain, following the old Mt. Lowe railway route to the ruins of a 1900s mountain resort. From there, you can extend to Inspiration Point for views through historic viewing tubes. The trail is well-graded, close to LA, and offers a solid workout with history and scenery. Good year-round, but go early in summer. No permit needed. Park along Lake Avenue in Altadena and follow the Sam Merrill Trail up.
