Your online experience should be safe, fair and transparent.

That’s why the European Commission launched the European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency (ECAT), hosted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC).

Their scientists represent the scientific backbone of the Digital Services Act (DSA), the EU’s landmark legislation that holds very large online platforms and search engines accountable for the risks their algorithms pose to society.

The DSA aims to create a safer and more trustworthy digital space by ensuring that platforms are transparent about how content is recommended, how ads are targeted, and how harmful or illegal content is handled.

At ECAT, experts from multiple disciplines work to uncover how algorithms shape our online experience, inform enforcement decisions, and support a digital ecosystem that protects citizens, especially the most vulnerable.
