The Philippines is well known to have some of the strangest street foods on offer! An outdoor street market in Cebu was the perfect place for us spend an evening eating our way through our own self-led Philippines street food tour. The local vendors were selling all kinds of Filipino foods from the street carts at the Carbon Market, and we decided this was the perfect time to inaugurate Nicole into some of the more adventurous Filipino street foods!
We started off strong with BBQ chicken head (chicken ulo) and BBQ chicken feet, and... well... it was an experience to be remembered. Thankfully, the world famous lechon was next, and, whoa baby! This Filipino classic is usually reserved for very special occasions, but today was special enough for us to dig in. Lechon is a whole pig that is roasted on a spit, usually for about 1 full day, and the result is the most amazing roasted pig you will ever eat. The skin is definitely the most sought over part!
Next up was dinuguan, which can only be described as pigs blood soup. Yup... you read that right! It's great that no part of the animal goes to waste, though, right? Mico was excited to try tuna panga (tuna jaw), which is a well-known dish in Cebu City. And of course cheese scallops - given the proximity to the ocean, you have to expect some excellent seafood in this area!
Because this is the Philippines, we had to have a delicious Mango Graham Shake, made with authentic Philippines Mango. And no Filipino food tour is complete without trying FIlipino desserts! Filipino cuisine is well-known for being VERY sweet, and leche flan definitely lived up to this expectation. We also got to try puto, which is one of out favoruite Filipino desserts!
Lastly came the dreaded balut. Nicole has been anticipating trying this the entire time we have been in the Philippines, and it was finally time to give it a go. Did she ever draw a crowd while trying this Filipino delicacy! Balut is a fertilized duck egg, and has made it's way onto shows such a fear factor because eatinga baby duck with feathers is not for the faint of heart. Stick around til the end to see how she did!
