Easter Island was long associated with a theory of ecological collapse, famine and conflict. Research led by archaeologist Nicolas Cauwe offers a different view of how the Rapa Nui responded to deforestation and environmental change.

Stone-covered fields helped retain heat and moisture, reduce erosion and support crops including sweet potatoes, yams and bananas. Skeletal evidence shows no sign of catastrophic famine, while many obsidian objects once classified as weapons appear to have been used mainly for scraping and cutting.

The Moais also point to a cultural transition rather than widespread destruction. Some statues were carefully laid face down, while others were deliberately buried near the Rano Raraku quarry as the old cult of deified ancestors gave way to the worship of Makemake.

For Nicolas Cauwe, the Rapa Nui adapted to a more difficult environment. Their later decline came with slavery and imported diseases following contact with the outside world.
A closer look at the archaeology reveals a different history of Easter Island.
