A 47-year-old East Windsor father is facing a risk of injury to a minor charge after police say he left his 1-year-old son unattended in a vehicle for an extended period of time at a strawberry farm Saturday.

Police documents say Kevin Pell told investigators his son had fallen asleep and that he left the air conditioning running while he worked. Police said the temperature inside the vehicle was not habitable for the child due to the vehicle's location and outside temperatures. It remains unclear whether the child died specifically from the heat.

Pell appeared in court Monday and is out on a $1 million bond with conditions of release. Police and the state said they expect further allegations against Pell. DCF is investigating.
