The magnetic field of the earth protects us from the solar radiation. However, that magnetic field is now weakening. As per the reports, the magnetic field around the earth, has lost almost 10% of its strength over the last two centuries. However, a rapid shrink has been observed in the South Atlantic Anomaly, which is the region between Africa and South America. The reason behind this is that the time for Earth's pole reversal is coming near.
Pole reversal is when the north and south magnetic poles flip. This flip will not occur immediately or suddenly, instead it’ll take centuries, there would be multiple north and south magnetic poles during this period, all around the planet.
This is not the first time that pole reversal will be happening on the Earth. This event has occurred few times in the history of our planet, as per the scientists, it happens roughly every 250,000 years.
So, is that going to affect us?
Well, this is not going to affect the general public to a huge extent, it’ll cause technical difficulties for various satellites and space-crafts, as the magnetic field getting weaker. Moreover, charged particles from the sun can penetrate into the atmosphere, which can be a little hazardous for us.
