Earth in Upheaval #4: Georges Cuvier - The Cycle of Disasters Shapes Evolution
Cuvier was the most renowned naturalist of his time. He was the founder of vertebrate paleontology, the science of extinct animals. Cuvier wrote this as an introductory essay to his four volume series Researches on the Fossilised Bones of Quadrupeds. Here he was attempting to reconstruct extinct species from their fossilised remains. He was the founder of catastrophism and viewed that animals only evolved after a catastrophes which is the opposite to Darwin's view. In this episode we will explore more about Cuvier's work, how Velikovsky used in it in the chapter when the land and sea changed places in the Earth in Upheaval book. We will also look at how Cuvier is seen today and also examine how new findings have confirmed parts of his concepts.
