When you're in the car, do your kids turn to their screens and earbuds, or are you all redeeming the time?
As parents, we spend countless hours every week in the car. We drive to practices, games, school, church, and everything in between. Instead of letting that time slip away into silence, screens, or distraction, what if we saw the car ride as one of our most significant opportunities for connection?
Think about it. You have your kids contained, comfortable, and without a dozen competing options. It's one of the few times in the week when you're physically together with nowhere else to be. That makes the car one of the most valuable "parenting classrooms" we have.
The challenge is simple: if we, as parents, are taking time out of our day to get our kids where they need to go, then surely we can ask for one thing in return: presence. Real, undistracted presence. Not out of guilt, but out of gratitude and shared purpose. The car ride can be where you ask meaningful questions, talk about what happened at school, build a habit of prayer, laugh together, or simply create space for your kids to open up. These moments don't have to be forced; they just need to be intentional.
Scripture reminds us of the wisdom of diligence and purposeful effort: "Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise… she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest" (Proverbs 6:6–8). Parenting requires the same kind of intentionality; using small, ordinary moments with great purpose. Try redeeming the drive. You might be surprised at the conversations that begin when you ask your kids to be fully present.
