If you want to catch big fish, targeting Eagle Lake Trophy Musky is a great option. Jeremy Smith and Jeff Simpson head to Eagle Lake in Sunset Country to cast for big muskies during the summer-to-fall transition. The fall muskie mission is underway, and Jeff and Brad have wasted no time getting into fish. Their first muskie encounter starts with excitement and surprise—“kind of caught me off guard,” Brad admits, as a sudden strike turned a slow morning into a thrill. The fish hit a bucktail, proving once again that even in the shifting patterns of early autumn, classics still catch.
Bucktails and Canadian Color
Fishing one of Brad’s favorite spots in Canada, the duo has been sampling a variety of habitat types. Mid-to-late September can be unpredictable—muskies may be shallow, deep, or anywhere in between—but this one came off a rock-to-weed transition. The thick-bodied, beautifully colored fish reflect the vibrancy of the surrounding landscape, just approaching peak fall color. “Awesome, awesome,” Brad exclaims. A quick photo, a smooth release, and it’s on to the next opportunity.
The Grind of Muskie Fishing
Make no mistake: muskie fishing is a grind. It’s demanding work with big baits and long hours on the water. The importance of good gear can’t be overstated. Brad relies on a variety of rods and reels for different presentations, with a particular appreciation for St. Croix’s Legend Elite series. Lightweight and responsive, it helps combat fatigue and keeps casting sharp through the day.
On the reel side, Daiwa’s Pro-Rex series gets the nod—offered in multiple gear ratios to match lure type and retrieve style. Heavy blades are matched with a low 5.3:1 for power, while faster 8:1 reels work great for snapping baits. Brad’s go-to for versatility? The 7:1 Pro-Rex, perfect for twitch baits and tubes.
