Artist: http://incompetech.comI made a MUSHROOM DRESS inspired by Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Vintage Pattern)Emily Snee2023-07-21 | It was so much fun to make this 1960’s mod dress inspired by Cece’s mushroom designs in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom! The first time I saw the mushroom clothes in game was talking to one of the NPCs seeking Misko’s Treasure, and I absolutely fell in love with the entire concept of them! So, I’m team Cece all the way!
I was really excited to use my 1962 Singer 306k vintage sewing machine and one of the vintage sewing patterns to make this dress. The pattern (Simplicity 6794) is from 1966 and was given to me, along with the SiBonne snood pattern and some others, by a wonderful friend of mine - and you can watch me unbox those, if you like: youtu.be/t0I4TWWSOp4

Mandy Barrington's book provided really clear instructions for drafting the stay's panels and I'm so proud of myself for getting through the construction process! And while the splotchy fabric dye results are unfortunate, they're still totally wearable and I will absolutely be wearing them! Sewing with recycled or upcycled materials is always a bit of an experiment, but I enjoy having a cool me made wardrobe section enough that it makes all the surprises and mishaps worth it. 😅
Also, I'm totally in love with how these vintage style/40s style trousers (or pants, for those on the other side of the Atlantic) look on me and fit me! I knew wide legged trousers were a good look for me, but I didn't realise HOW good until I was editing the footage!

Saying that, I did learn a lot about fashion and sewing techniques of the late 1940's and what was thought of as right and proper for college women at the time.
It's always fascinating to look through books like this that give so much context to the time period of the vintage clothing, sewing and fashion that I love! Even if some of what Clothing for Moderns and Mabel D Erwin had to say does sound pretty stuffy and strange by today's standards!
But for my Grandma, in her house craft and domestic science teacher training of the early 1950's, I'm sure this book made at least a *bit more* sense!

Since filming, I think I *have* actually figured out a way of fixing the shirt so that it’s usable (thank the sewing gods)! And although I haven’t finished the whole outfit for halloween, I’m glad I could get this video out for you all to watch and I’m excited for you to see the other parts of this Gentleman Jack/Jack Skellington cosplay mashup!
This project is really giving me a chance to play with all the things I love about costuming and historical sewing/vintage sewing. I’ve had a wonderful time researching regency and victorian menswear, historical tailoring, Anne Lister, and so much more for this project!
I’ve already received some amazingly generous help that’s covered some of my material costs for the project. This is the first instalment in my -Gentleman Jack meets Jack Skellington- costume/cosplay and I’m thrilled with how it came out! I really wanted to use a spooky, halloween appropriate silk brocade to play into that 1830s late Regency/early Victorian niche of dandyism in men’s fashion, but I really struggled to find one! However, this gorgeous green and black bat-like pattern is stunning (and is, obviously, perfectly in keeping with my usual colour palette)!
I think that finding a way of merging Tim Burton’s Pumpkin King and the screen interpretation of industrialist Anne Lister is off to a smashing start!

This vintage industrial sewing machine is a beast and it's such an honour to be entrusted with it! It was also amazing to talk to Jed Phoenix about their time working with Velda Lauder and being given this machine after Velda's sudden passing in 2013. It's an amazing piece of corsetry and fashion history, and I am SO excited to actually learn how to use an industrial 😅

Cruella Poster image use rationale: The poster art for Cruella (2021) copyright is believed to belong to the distributor of the item promoted, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the publisher of the item promoted or the graphic artist. Because the image is poster art, a form of product packaging or service marketing, the entire image is needed to identify the product or service, properly convey the meaning and branding intended, and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the image. The copy is of sufficient resolution for commentary and identification but lower resolution than the original poster. Copies made from it will be of inferior quality, unsuitable as counterfeit artwork, pirate versions or for uses that would compete with the commercial purpose of the original artwork.
As poster art, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the same artwork or poster would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary.Overcoming Creative Blocks: How I push through when projects go WRONGEmily Snee2021-08-19 | Links to art etc will be on their way soon!

So what do you do with cute clothes that aren't your colour? DYE THEM! They were both made of polyester, so I needed to use a synthetic fibre dye. I've never dyed polyester before and was a little nervous about how it would go but the blouse and skirt turned out GREAT!

Vintage Underwear gets a Psychedelic MakeoverEmily Snee2021-04-30 | I made a vintage style bullet bra MYSELF! WITHOUT a real pattern! Vintage undergarments and retro underwear are something I LOVE so I wanted to challenge myself, as a person with a fuller bust, to make a bullet bra (also sometimes called a torpedo bra or conical bra). I wanted to get that iconic pointy shape of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s to really round out some of my retro style looks, and I’m so happy that I finished it!
It was really interesting to research and learn about! I had obviously seen what bullet bras looked like under clothing and seen pin up images of just the retro lingerie but the history was fascinating! And even though I was thinking the rockin’ fifties when I decided on the project, the bra I actually made was closer to the earlier bullet bras because of its lack of underwire.
Although the closest cousin to the modern underwire bra was invented in the late 1920s, with one of the earliest patents for an underwire brassiere filed in 1929 by Helene Pons, the original bullet bras of the 1940’s were not underwired!
During World War II, many ‘peace time’ industries stopped production and repurposed their business and factories towards the manufacture of weapons and military equipment to aid the war effort. The enormous need for metal for these purposes lead to shortages of metal and interruptions to the import of rubber from Asia. This coupled with the patriotic propaganda around salvage drives on the home front for materials like metal (which had minimal impact economically but significant impact on citizen morale) meant that the availability and wearing of corsets declined significantly. To fill the void left by the absence of their usual lingerie and the need for adequate support in the new jobs that many women were working the bullet bra, or torpedo bra, quickly gained popularity.
The rise of the ’Sweater Girl’ in the popular culture of the late 1940s and the 1950’s, the increasingly dramatic shape of bullet bras because of improvements in technology and the addition of underwires, and their association with sex symbols like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield kept the bullet bra in fashion well into the 1960s.
I really enjoyed the challenge of creating this bra! I love the look of vintage lingerie and undergarments, but this was the first time I’d considered making my own vintage underwear!

I wanted to pay homage to my favourite Terry Pratchett Discworld books and my favourite character from them, Tiffany Aching. I’m really happy with how it came out and really proud of myself for making something this -cool- and this *pretty* with minimal materials. Seriously, apart from foam clay and a few tiny pieces of fake plant, I only used cardboard, paper, wire, paint, a teeny bit of sand, thread, PVA glue and hot glue (LOOOOTS of hot glue)!
I LOVE that the stars glow, and it’s been so nice in the evening to pop on the little fairy lights and see the stars inside the little world I made twinkling away 😊

Short vintage hairstyles can be really tough to find tinstructions for, so I thought I’d create the tutorial I wish I’d had when I started playing with vintage style and make something that looked at vintage hairstyles for short hair.
This video tackles a 1950’s, 1920’s and an Edwardian look! You could also use the 50’s methods to do short 1940s hair by switching up your curl set pattern, and there’s a link below to a Pinterest board of set patterns for different looks!
Also for the 20’s I looked at finger waves, which are actually different from marcel waves (who knew, hey?)! So I think my next vintage hair challenge is learning to marcel wave my hair. I think I have my finger waves and my vintage brush out nailed, so it’s time to move onto the next technique and master that!

The Thrill of the Maiden Fair - Freesound Music youtu.be/7rDU46roC_wLipstick and Sewing: The Dangers! #shortsEmily Snee2021-02-01 | I realised while making my Victorian Blouse the other week, but thought I should warn other sewing enthusiasts, seamsters/seamstresses and makers out there via #shorts, that being glamorous while working on your sewing projects can be a risky business!

In terms of both the pattern drafting and the making of the skirt itself, I found it simple and straightforward and it would be great for a beginner sewing project for anyone interested in vintage style, historical fashion, historical dress or history bounding.
I, once again used upcycled/recycled material in the form of old curtains I purchased second hand and was really happy with the results!
I made this skirt for a full costume inspired by my favourite book The Night Circus by writer Erin Morgenstern for the Foundations Revealed 2021 Contest.

I tried a historical 1903 shirtwaist pattern without success, so ended up draping and drafting the shirtwaist myself to get the size and shape right. I really wanted to achieve and emphasise that iconic Victorian/Edwardian pigeon chested silhouette, so used a lot of gathering in the front of the blouse and with the gathered puff sleeves.
I wanted to go for some slightly gothic, dark academia vibes and I think I achieved what I set out to do (even if there were MANY hiccups).
I'm making this blouse/shirtwaist for a full costume inspired by my favourite book The Night Circus by writer Erin Morgenstern for the Foundations Revealed 2021 Contest.

For anyone who's concerned about henna smelling bad - I personally find it more pleasant than the ammonia and peroxide in commercial hair dyes. As for the mess, it was messy but not that much messier than standard box hair dye (although that may just be me...)
I’m happy with the results, and before anyone yells at me in the comment section - I now know that black henna can be dangerous and WHY it can be dangerous. However, the dye that I used very clearly states that it's free of PPD and heavy metals, and that the formulas have been tested under medical supervision. Also its only ingredients are Indigofera Tinctoria Leaf Powder, and Lawsonia Inermis Leaf Extract (or in plain English, Indigo and Henna)
This is the dye that I used for those who are curious: amzn.to/3sBJxEA
