"What if I die 2nite?"
I was writing a song about dying, when I noticed that everyone who writes or sings about death, dies ... and usually tragically.
Tupac Shakur was one of the most influential and successful rappers of all time. In 1995, his lyrics moved from introspective to Gangsta rap (a controversial hip-hop subgenre whose lyrics assert gang culture and values). His tracks include Bury Me a G, How Long Will They Mourn Me?, Cradle to the Grave, Death Around the Corner and If I Die 2Nite.
In 1996, in true gangster style, a rival gang pulled beside Tupac's BMW and rapidly fired, hitting Tupac four times. He died in a Las Vegas hosptial one week later.
Side Note: I quickly reworked the theme of my tune to be about returning home through space and time (totally not dying). I then dropped the lyrics and turned the melody into a guitar instrumental. That should be safe (youtu.be/1FuUKGrjEGY)!
