After a full day of breakdowns, we’re finally moving potatoes — but not the way we want to. About 25,000 sacks from this cellar are being dumped and spread with manure trucks as fertilizer because the potatoes simply aren’t worth hauling to a processor.
We fought bevels moving over, belts getting cut, bearings going out, and even a sheared key on a sprocket before we could barely get rolling this morning. The goal now is to have two solid days and get this cellar completely emptied so we can start prepping it for seed.
We’re dumping these potatoes early to avoid sprouting issues that have caused major problems in the past — including having to scrape potatoes with a backhoe just to get them to move. At least right now, they don’t stink, and frozen potatoes make decent fertilizer once they break down.
On top of dumping potatoes, we’re back in the shop working on potato planters and dealing with the reality of owning equipment without solid parts and service support. This is just part of farming — fixing what breaks, making do with what you have, and pushing forward.
