Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait were governed from India till 1947 — you could travel there without a passport. Then India let the opportunity go.
Till 1 April 1947, the Gulf states of the Arabian peninsula sat inside the British Indian framework. Not as foreign territory — as places the Viceroy of India held direct charge of.
🇮🇳 HOW IT ACTUALLY WORKED
✅ Under the Interpretation Act of 1889, these states were governed from India
✅ The Viceroy of India held direct responsibility for them
✅ Indian political officers and police officials were posted there
✅ Indian troop deployments happened on that soil
✅ Travel from India was effectively domestic — no passport needed
⚖️ THEN CAME PARTITION
Once the Mountbatten Plan was confirmed, a debate opened on what to do with these states. India and Pakistan had an option on the table.
But India's position was impossible. A refugee crisis. A partition that had just happened. Nation-building from scratch. And more than 500 princely states still to integrate.
On 1 April 1947 the Gulf was separated from India, and the whole story changed.
💭 WHAT INDIA MIGHT HAVE HAD
West Asian politics. Maritime dominance. The oil trade that runs the world today. A seat inside every geopolitical conflict in the region.
History is full of "what ifs" — and this is one of the biggest India never got to answer.
