The carnivore diet, often hailed as a return to our primal dietary roots, revolves around consuming exclusively animal-based foods. When it comes to building muscle, dry fasting needs a helping hand. A modified version of the carnivore diet helped me go from this, to this. It’s usually a way of eating for people who believe that humans have evolved as hyper carnivores. This diet promotes enhanced mental clarity, increased energy, and rapid weight loss due to ketosis and fat adaptation. By eliminating plant-derived sugars and carbohydrates, people often report stabilized blood sugar levels and a diminished appetite, leading to a natural calorie restriction without the sensation of deprivation. With a rich intake of high-quality proteins and essential fats, particularly from nutrient-dense organ meats, the diet supports muscle growth, improved skin health, and optimal cognitive function. The simplicity of the carnivore diet also means reduced meal planning and preparation complexity, aligning with a minimalist and focused approach to nutrition. Now I know this all sounds wonderful, and I truly believe it’s a powerful tool in your journey to health, but it’s important to remember there’s not enough studies on long-term health. If you do not ingest any supplements, you may be missing out on a few nutrients specific to plants, things like phytonutrients, and you may deal with some electrolyte imbalances.
By focusing solely on animal products, this diet naturally minimizes carbohydrate intake, facilitating an easier transition into a state of ketosis. Ketosis, where the body burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates, synergizes perfectly with extended fasting. Because you have already entered a state of ketosis you get to avoid causing the keto flu in the first few days of your dry fast. The first few days can sometimes be the hardest barrier to break. Along with caffeine withdrawal, the keto flu is what stops most people from going past the 36 hour mark. Both the carnivore diet and extended fasting stimulate autophagy, the body's natural cellular cleansing process. So if you’re already in a higher autophagic state, the dry fast will speed it up even faster. Since dry fasting already promotes super charged autophagy, entering through a carnivore style diet will make it even stronger. There’s also a third very powerful synergy with the carnivore diet and dry fasting, and it’s the therapeutic dehydration. Low carb diets deplete glycogen, which helps store water. So naturally entering the fast from a low carb diet means that you are already in deeper dehydration and can expect the benefits to start sooner. This means that a 3 day dry fast may in fact have the same power as a 4 day dry fast that was started from a higher carb diet. However, in this same vein of thought, a carnivore diet may make very long dry fasts harder, so keep that in mind.
So we know about Autophagy and how it gets supercharged by dry fasting. But the carnivore diet is full of animal protein so it should naturally inhibit autophagy, we don’t really want that. The worry is that a carnivore diet might actually accelerate aging, even if it makes you feel great. However. We have to take some things into consideration. Autophagy's mechanisms depend on the balance between mTOR and AMPK. Think of mTOR as anti autophagy, because it focuses on growth and replication, while AMPK is focused on fasting, resting, and recycling. So mTOR is activated by amino acids, while AMPK is activated by fasting and carbohydrate restriction. Ok, but here’s where things get interesting. In a carnivore diet, even with higher protein, AMPK can still be stimulated if carbohydrate intake remains low, especially if you’re doing some form of intermittent fasting. A lot of people who eat carnivore, only eat one meal a day, in this case its an interesting balance thats struck between recycling and growth, and this potentially can be enough to counterbalance the negative effects of aggressive mTOR activation. However, by dry fasting, you’re essentially fixing any damage caused by overconsumption of protein, and guaranteeing that you get the best of both worlds. Dry fasting for the win.
