How far can a cocktail transport you? For me, one of the most evocative cocktails is a Caiprinha - when I was 20 I travelled around South America and drank more than I probably care to remember…! Don’t worry if you don’t have any cachaca to hand though, because we’ll also be looking at an easy substitution at the end, the Caprioska.
CAIPRINHA
60ml (2oz) cachaca
1 - 1 ½ limes
2 teaspoons soft cane sugar
Glass: rocks glass
Garnish: dehydrated lime wheel
Method:
I like to squeeze the limes a little first, leaving some juice in, then cut them into wedges and add to a shaker tin. Add sugar and muddle, then add the lime juice and stir to dissolve the sugar as much as possible although a little crunch is OK in this rustic drink. Add cachaca and ice and shake briefly, just to break up the ice a little. ‘Dump’ into the glass, i.e. don’t strain and garnish with a lime wheel.

15ml (½ oz) sugar syrup

Garnish: dehydrated lime wheel
Method: squeeze your lime and cut into wedges, add to your shaker tin with vodka and sugar syrup. Add ice, shake and ‘dump’ into your glass. Garnish with a lime wheel and enjoy!
