Technical details:
The light-up MIDI controller is called LUMI and was sent to me by Roli (2 units for 4 octaves). The full-size controller I use is the Sequential Prophet XL. Other mini keyboards I use are the Yamaha Reface CS and Korg microKEY-61.
My DAW is Cubase. I use a variety of plugins and hardware synths for the sounds - Keyscape, Retrologue, Organteq, Halion SE, Prophet 6 (to name a few).
All the MIDI art is recorded live, and I don't edit the MIDI in any way (no quantization, no velocity editing, nothing). Sometimes I add a backing track - usually after recording, to give the art some groove and context when I feel it needs it.
How did I get into MIDI art? Ever since I saw the inspiring work of Savant, Andrew Huang and other amazing MIDI artists I've been thinking of trying to create something like that in real time. Jacob Collier deserves a lot of credit as well - he was the first to pull it off live and his fantastic videos proved that the concept can work. Finally, the news of a new Metroid 2D game after 19 years (Metroid Dread) got me hyped and inspired me to give the idea a shot at last. I'm glad I did! :)
