It’s finally here!!! I’ve been working on the animation for this for almost 4 months, and I’ve had the idea for my unofficial Ultra Ego theme since I did my Vegeta Medley, which was almost 2 years ago!! So I’ve put a great deal of work into this one :)
So let’s break down the theme itself. I wanted it to feel like a modern Kikuchi Dragon Ball OST in the intro- and following that, I used the piano motif from “A Secret Plan With Ones Life On The Line” from Norihito Sumitomo to build the basis of the theme. We keep returning to those “four notes” throughout the track, which I like to think of as the climactic motif of his Ultra Ego. Maybe everytime he gets the upper hand it plays. The chugging guitar riff is based on the rhythm in “Vegeta - SSJ” from Mike Smith of Faulconer Productions, but I only hinted at the melody, as I still wanted this theme to feel like it was a part of DB Super. The almost thrash metal style speaks to the chaotic quality of Vegeta in this form. I used the dissonant synth from Beerus’ Madness, to represent the god of destruction’s presence. I had to add the bells in, as they are so closely associated with Vegeta- although I will admit I was inspired by Attack on Titan in the way i used them. And finally, I created my own arrangement of “Fierce Battle Against A Mighty Foe” within the bridge- the reason I wanted to use this was because I always loved how much it hyped up the scene where Vegeta was getting the upper hand on Jiren, and I continued to associate it with him after that. The slowness, in my version, demonstrates his godly control over this situation.
The animation is not 100% perfect but I really enjoyed making it, and I think it’s my best work so far. I’m still a novice but I will get better. I took images straight from the manga, and tried to direct how I think it might play out cinematically. The only overt thing i would want to improve was the art style consistency between shots, particularly the turnaround. For the rotation, I used a 3D model of Vegeta, put it into blender and created an awesome rotating camera movement. Then, I exported that camera movement, brought the pngs into procreate and painstakingly drew and painted over every frame of that sequence (60-70 frames in total!! This part definitely took the longest. After completing that, I compiled all my animations and used after effects and premiere to composite everything together. I used a bunch of fx assets from Motion Array, Envato Elements and Vecteezy.
I’m probably not gonna make another one of these epic animations for a while, as they take so long! But it has taught me so much and prepared me for my own original animated film I want to make one day. I’m over half way storyboarding it, and the music is on my channel if you want to listen to it as it is :)
