Remember that time Doug Ford went on TVO's Political Blind Date with Jagmeet Singh? They frolicked around Toronto, going for coffee, driving around taking a look at streetcars, and went for a bike ride.

It was a great episode! But… Season 1's missing from the ENTIRE INTERNET. So I had to go to great lengths to figure out how I'd find this episode so that I could see and hear what Doug Ford had to say about getting around by other options… Other than driving a personal vehicle.

Because for anyone who knows anything about moving people, not personal motor vehicles, you'll know that big cities will NEVER be able to not have traffic if you build the city for just cars. Because they're THE MOST resource and space-hungry mode of transportation there in the world.

So getting more people to use streetcars, transit in general, and active transportation –like riding a bicycle or electric scooter for everyday tasks– IS THE SOLUTION TO TRAFFIC. Not the crazy and insanely expensive solutions that Ford has been spewing out recently without thought.

Not only that, the Conservative Government ALREADY MESSED UP a β€œsolution” by using taxpayer money to build the 407 and then selling it off to private equity. And now the PUBLIC can't drive on the 407 because it's too expensive. I mention it in this video but, seriously, it's an entire other deep dive as to how insane this was. Still around 80 years to go until Ontarians get that 407 back, too, because of the 99 year lease lolwut.

Anyway, I found Season 1, Episode 2 of TVO’s Original β€œPolitical Blind Date: Transit” featuring Doug Ford and Jagmeet Singh going for a bike ride. And this video is about how I did that.

In this video, I dive into a random but interesting idea sparked by watching a truck driver turn into a wide protected bike lane in Toronto. This 'pavement princess' of a driver, who clearly thought he was too good to wait in traffic, ended up making a pretty solid argument for why we need even wider bike lanesβ€”ones that could also be used by emergency vehicles when traffic grinds to a halt. I couldn't help but laugh at how this guy, without even knowing it, gave me a great example of why bike lanes should be wider and more protected.

As I break down what happened, I talk about how well-designed bike lanes can do more than just protect cyclists. They could actually help save lives by allowing ambulances and fire trucks to bypass gridlock. I also share some stories, like the time I saw how easily pedestrians in Greece made way for an emergency vehicle. That’s the kind of flexibility cars just don't have. Stick around for my thoughts on how wider bike lanes could benefit everyone, not just cyclists, and some fun solutions to make our streets smarter and safer.
