Your laundry detergents don't dissolve and work properly in FREEZING water, only regular summer temperature tap water (aka NOT freezing). So make sure you use the Cold/Warm setting during the colder months, not just the Cold setting.
Definitely begin using the cold cycle laundry setting as soon as you can in the Spring, though! Unfortunately, anything warmer than Cold takes a lot more energy because… heat.
