greetings everyone. in these final days of Doom Mixtape, i bring you a triple-header of videos for the holidays. our video today is a double-header of brutalist-style maps i had both considered for this series back in 2015, but passed on until now.
the first is the mysterious pit-diving map "Abudhnas" by Argentine Doom mapper Nicolás Monti, known for his very spare, abstract minimally detailed maps inspired by Doom wads from the early days of 1994-1996. Abudhnas is Map 08 of "Erkattäññe", which won a Cacoward in 2015 and brought greater attention to his maps and style. i was very compelled by the description on the One Man Doom blog run by kmxexii back in the day. this style is distinctive and unique, yet it really gives you nothing. it's almost as if the levels don't care about you. along with the pop song midis used in this set, it evokes this strange feeling of melancholy and naive nostalgia, but also a kind of austere coldness in some of the design choices and the very sparse/strange detailing.
the second is "The Crusher", Map 06 by ProcessingControl aka Eli Cohen from the Doom 2 In Name Only set i originally started in 2012, but was quickly taken over by Eris Falling and released in 2014. it's a remake of "The Crusher" from the original Doom 2 done in a really cool austere brutalist style but with an extremely inventive and creative re-use of space to get around the vanilla Doom engine limitations and a visually compelling climactic battle. this set has always gotten a bad rap from some in spite of having some really great maps, so i also talk about that.
