hello friends! back again with another journey through a pretty obscure map and mapper. this one's called "Cathedral of Rot" from 2017's Joy of Mapping 4 map jam set organized by Jimmy and it's by Lord Shadow Z, who is an author i have not seen or heard of any other maps from.

the map is a decaying hellish green cathedral featuring a lot of plant overgrowth, many strange non-orthogonal rooms with weird angles, eclectic texturing, and a lot of details surrounded on the outside by a moat, reminiscent a little bit of Doom 2's The Citadel (though more overtly hellish). the amount of detail in the map to convey the sense of place of this overgrown cathedral is especially surprising given that it was only made in a week. and while it bears the mark of a newer mapper in some ways (the combat is a bit wonky and many areas are hard to differentiate from each other) it's still an ultra-distinct experience unto itself, and i found it a very memorable standout in the midst of an already surprisingly high quality mapset in Joy of Mapping 4.
