I was very surprised at how well Doom Eternal ran on this AMD Firepro W7000! The Firepro W7000 has the same exact GPU as the AMD Radeon HD 7870, but with double the VRAM, giving it 4GB of GDDR5 on a 256 bit memory bus. These GPUs were both released in 2012 and were a mid-high end part of AMD's first GCN line of GPUs. They only partially support DX12 on Windows and as a result have degraded compatibility on it. Using the AMDGPU driver on Linux with these old old GPUs allows the use of newer APIs that have been backported to these old GPUs, like Vulkan 1.3.3!
The performance is so much more consistent when I'm not recording, it doesn't stutter or drop below 30 like it did in this recording.
This is also why I record at 30fps instead of 60fps, because 60fps recording drops the frame rate even more than 30, even though I'm using CPU x264 encoding. I think Pipewire is taking some performance to capture the frames.
The game's built in TAA upscaling works really well, so I usually play at 1440p with a 50% resolution scale and it looks good. Doesn't have any of the typical FSR/DLSS artifacts other than a softer image.
0:00 - 12:31 Immora, Low Settings (resolutions listed on right side of screen)
12:31 - 16:46 Super Gore Nest, Low Settings (resolutions listed on right side of screen)
16:46 - 20:21 The World Spear, Low Settings (resolutions listed on right side of screen)
20:21 - 24:08 Low Settings Native 1440p!! (No Resolution Scaling!)
