Does anyone know what this alligator do ?

This hidden alligator (not crocodile) lurks in the sewers of the ARC Complex level. It's unclear whether this thing is alive or dead as a result of the demons cleansing Earth.
When you get too close to the alligator, it submerges underneath the muk and guk.

Will anybody be able to solve this mystery ?
