Shows examples of the three basic movement speeds in Doom 64 (and most other Classic-Doom games): Walking, Running and Strafe-running. Enable Captions for on-screen notes, and read below for more information on running in various Doom 64 games.

In each example in this video, the player-character is covering the same distance through a hallway, but at progressively faster speeds. Movement types shown and start-to-finish-times:

1) Max Walking speed, ~4.5 seconds
2) Max forward Running speed, ~3 seconds
3) Strafe-running speed, ~2 seconds

'Strafe-running' is using a simultaneous combination of Run-forward plus Strafe-sideways (in this case, strafing right). This moves the player character at an odd angle, but at a speed that is faster than normal forward-running speed.

Running speeds are particularly useful for dodging projectiles, getting across small gaps or pits, taking less damage on corrosive floors, and for completing time-critical objectives.

ABOUT 'RUNNING' IN DOOM 64

In all Classic Doom games, the player character can walk or run. In the original N64 game, the default Run button (named 'Speed') was the left-most of the 4 yellow 'C' buttons on the right half of the N64 controller.

All Doom 64 games or modern ports allow controller buttons or keyboard keys to be assigned/re-assigned to different functions. 'Run' or other functions can be checked or (re)assigned by first opening the game's Main menu, then:

In original N64 Doom 64: Options - Control Pad - Speed
In the 2020 Doom 64 ports: Options - Input - Bindings - Speed
In Doom64 EX: Options - Controls - Bindings - Run

NOTE: Some of the Doom 64 ports or conversions above also have a separate 'Autorun' (automatic, continuous run) function. In such games, if Autorun is already On at any given time, then activating Run/Speed at the same time will actually slow you down to walking speed.

Note that the original N64 game will not preserve changes to controller layout (or any other user-configurable settings) once the N64 is reset or powered down.
