I missed a kill somewhere, so I guess I shouldn’t call it a 100% run, but I don’t think it matters too much.
Table of Contents:
0:11 Red-Hot Rockets for the Boners
1:09 Bishop Crankey’s Dungeon
5:06 Archviles on Hominy Ridge
6:38 Ivanka the Russian Temptress
10:30 Kurt Dropdown-Takeover
12:31 The Reflecting Pool
16:08 In the Cage
18:56 The Really Fucking Hard Ledge (Midsave Alert!)
28:48 Final Fuckers
Serious Review:
This may come as no surprise to people who know my taste/style, but I really don’t like the beginning at all. It’s just classic incidental bullshit for me. Every fight in the beginning has certain strings attached that make them completely tedious/annoying without items gained in the other fights. You can grab a megasphere for the armor straight away (See “In the Cage”), but without the rest of the enemies around you're dead. You can also grab the BFG right away (See “The Reflecting Pool”), but you’ll probably die from the archviles because of a lack of armor.
To top it off, there are annoying-as-fuck sniper enemies (revenants, archviles, a cyber) littered around the place. All of these factors make for an annoying experience for me. I know a lot of players like this kind of dynamic, where the fights are all tied to each other, but it’s juts not my thing.
The rest of the map is pretty setpiece-y, which I am a fan of, so that’s some positive points for this map. For the hard ledge fight, I had a strategy worked out on my last playthrough, but I forgot what it was here. I just kinda used a bunch of saves to get through it. The last fight is okay too, I guess. Nothing super special.
I like the visuals and the color scheme a lot, so that adds another point. I really don’t like the beginning.
