Thumb strum, 4/4 time (D D D D)
Thumb strum, 3/4 time (waltz)
Eighth note strum (DU, DU, DU, DU)
Eighth note strum, swing (DU, DU, DU, DU)
Church lick (D DU D DU)
Calypso (Island) strum (D DU UDU)

If you stick with each strum until you learn it and can play a few songs with it and can sing along pleasurably, then your progress will be swift and true!
