Monthly conversations with my mentees is one of my favourite parts of helping them develop their photography.
During these discussions, we don't just look at photos and analyse pictures, we also talk about the philosophy of image making and how mentees can find personal meaning in their own photography.
This means trying to ignore trends and what others are doing and focus in on the photography that truly matters to them.
I try to act as a guide, to use my experience as a professional photographer, to help them discover their personal interests and passions, then channel that into their image making.
Ann is a great example of that. When I started to work with her last year, she had already taught herself how to make good single images, but she was struggling to take the next step to tell stories with her photos.
I gave her my professional blueprint how to conceptualise, shoot and edit stories.
Since then, she has worked on multiple stories, all of which have a deep and personal connection to her and her life. Its been an absolute pleasure to see her work develop over this time.
